Galaxy S5 Mini – Announced

Without making too much of a big deal of things, Samsung revealed the Galaxy S5 Mini. The phone is slightly bigger than the old Mini, now having a 4.5 inch screen, yet still falling under the reasonable limits of a “mini” phone. Its specs aren’t exactly high-end, though, but it still retains the trademark features of the regular Galaxy S5.

The Galaxy S5 Mini is built around a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED screen of a 720p resolution, measuring around 131.1 x 64.8 x 9.1 mm and weight at 120 g ( where as the S4 Mini was measured at 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm and weighed in at 107 g ). The good news here is that the pixel density went up – from the previous 256 ppi to the current 326 ppi.

The body of this phone is IP67 certified, that meaning that it is completely dust-tight and can be submerged under up to a meter for circa 30 minutes. Interestingly enough, though, there is no protection flap covering the USB port, Samsung managing to make it water-proof via some special sort of coating. The back of this device is made of perforated leather and features a heart-rate monitor, while the hardware Home button doubles as a fingerprint reader.

Unfortunately, the processing power hasn’t been improved too much – the Galaxy S5 Mini packs 4 Cortex-A7 cores at circa 1.4 GHz while the RAM remains at 1.5 GB. The internal storage was doubled to 16 GB and also has a MicroSD card slot if that isn’t enough. This phone will come out with Android 4.4 KitKat and feature S Health, Private Mode, Kids Mode and Ultra Power Saving mode. The battery capacity was also a bit upgraded, going up to 2100 mAh.

Another thing that has been upgraded for this Galaxy Mini phones is the connectivity, going up to 150 MB/s LTE and keeping the IR blaster on top. The camera department remains unchanged at 8 MP with video capabilities still at 1080p at 30 frames per second. The camera features the Shot & More and Virtual Tour modes from the big Galaxy S5 as well as the S Studio editor.

This phone will start rolling out in Russia early on this month in 4 color options: Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but there’s a dual-SIM version inbound as well.
