Cell Phones to the Rescue!

It was only a decade or so ago that if you left the house or work place, you were unable to contact any of your friends, family or colleagues. Today, thanks to cell phones, laptops and tablet computers, it seems like we can’t get away from them!

Cell phones in particular are everywhere. Kids have them “for emergencies only”, adults have them to keep an eye on their kids and to stay in touch with friends and work. They’re quite literally everywhere, look around you now – there must be a cell phone either on the table in front of you or you could even be reading this article on it!

To many, particularly on public transport and in bars and restaurants, they can be an annoyance with constant beeping, ringing and even tweeting at us, but the fact is nearly all of us would be lost without them, and here are just three key reasons why cells are now our first thought in an emergency:

1. Schools. When we drop the kids off at school on the way to work, or pack them off on the bus in the morning, that could be the last time we hear from them until home time – and we all hope it is as it means they’re safe and sound in their classes. Unfortunately there are times when the schools need to contact us to inform us of an accident or to tell us that our child has been taken ill. In this case, they need to ring us and if we’re out of the house, the cell phone is the solution.

2. Elderly family. While you might not consider the elderly to be particularly tech-savvy, and the majority would admit it themselves, they do like their independence. Walking out of the house to meet friends or go to the shops allows them to feel free and active, but if something goes wrong, their standard T-Mobile cell phones that simply ring and send messages, might be their way of contacting you or the emergency services if something happens.

3. Safety. If the kids go off to the park with their friends or you go out shopping on your own, it’s vital that you stay in touch in case something happens. Cell phones mean that you can call home if you have an accident or if the kids have hurt themselves in the park, falling off a swing for example. Similarly, you can call the kids and say “it’s time for dinner, get home!” while allowing you to call from the shops to see if there is any bread in the house for breakfast the next day.
